These test tubes each contained a specific carbohydrate, unique to each respective tube. Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria were added to each tube, in order to test the organism’s ability to produce acid, during its oxidation of any of these carbohydrates, which included from left to right, glucose, maltose, sucrose, lactose, fructose, and mannitol. You can see a yellow color change in the tube containing glucose, indicating the ability of N. gonorrhoeae, to only oxidize glucose.
