This photomicrograph of a section of bone tissue, which had been extracted from a growth plate of a patient suspected of having rickets. The histopathologic changes seen in this specimen, through the region of the epiphyseal plate, suggested that this patient was in the early stage of the disease. The first changes to emerge, at the cellular level, involve the cessation of the deposition of inorganic mineral in the cartilaginous tissue, between the hypertrophic columns of chondrocytes. You are able to see the disorganization beginning in the chondrocytic columnar growth pattern.
