Due to a vitamin A deficiency, this patient developed xerophthalmia, or drying of the eye, with subsequent Bitot’s spots, which were especially evident in the right eye, as a cloudy, opacification of the cornea. One of the symptoms of a vitamin A deficiency is chronic drying of the conjunctival membrane, which covers the surface of the eye, and its drying gives rise, if untreated, to the development of these keratinized patches known as Bitot’s spots.
