This illustration depicts a photomicrograph of a specimen processed using the Gram staining method, and revealed the presence of Gram positive, Corynebacterium diphtheriae bacteria. C. diphtheriae is the etiologic pathogen responsible for causing diphtheria, an infection that affects the upper respiratory tract, where an inflammatory exudate causes severe obstruction to the breathing airways, and sometimes suffocation.
