Caption:
Under a magnification of 900X, and observed using the phase-contrast microscopy technique, this sample contained Treponema pallidum spirochetes, as well as a slight amount of debris associated with the culture within which these organisms were grown. This image was captured after having been processed, using of a technique known as continuous particle electrophoresis (CPE), which removed most of the debris, thereby, providing a clean specimen, containing pure T. pallidum organisms. See PHIL 21115, for another view of a specimen prior to CPE processing, whereupon, you will see much culture debris, alongside the characteristic spirochetes.
