This photomicrograph of a thin film blood smear, revealed an older, solitary, granulated, Plasmodium ovale trophozoite, which also displayed irregular projections, directed outwardly from the erythrocyte’s cell wall, known as fimbriation. The granulation, or stippling you see, is known as Schüffner's dots.
