Standing in front of the Biological Safety Laboratory at the Jui Hospital in Sierra Leone, this photograph was captured during the country’s Ebola outbreak in 2015, and depicted Dr. Yuzhi Zhang, from China’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC). See PHIL 20584, for another image of Dr. Zhang and her Chinese cohorts, during their Sierra Leone visit. Their task was to bring the CDC diagnostic test for Ebola, to the new Biological Safety Laboratory at the Jui Hospital in Sierra Leone. The Jui laboratory was built by the Chinese government, and staffed with Chinese speaking scientists from the China CDC, which performs many of the same functions as the U.S. CDC. As Chinese nationals, Dr. ShuYu and Dr. Yuzhi were able to cross language and travel barriers, to quickly get needed supplies and training to the Chinese laboratory.
