This 1963 image depicts what had been an auto-inoculation reaction on the skin of this patient’s foot, after having received a smallpox vaccination with live vaccinia virus. Vaccinia vaccine is a highly effective immunizing agent that brought about the global eradication of smallpox. Because the vaccine is live, it can be spread to other people, as well as to other parts of one's own body.
