This Nigerian infant had been born with a congenital abnormality known as a cleft lip. During her embryonic development, her upper lip had not joined in the facial midline. Here, after having undergone surgical intervention, the lip was joined together beneath the nose, and scar tissue can be seen in the region of what was previously a gap.
