From an anterior view, these red cutaneous lesions, which appeared on this patient’s lower abdomen, and upper right thigh, represented chigger bite marks, made by the arachnid, Eutrombicula lipovskyana. See PHIL 20201, and 20202, for additional views of this patient’s infestation. These chigger bites can cause intense itching, and reddish welts on the skin. E. lipovskyana are not known to transmit infectious diseases in the U.S. Their bites, however, can cause subsequent cutaneous infections, when a sufferer scratches the lesions, thereby, initiating trauma to the skin, which in turn, can become infected.
