This is a photomicrograph of a small bowel tissue sample, which had been extracted during the autopsy of a patient, who had succumbed to a case of acute cholera. Histopathologic findings exhibited here, showed a general disintegration of the small bowel mucosal epithelium, which is revealed in the separation of the epithelial layers. However, this was determined to be an artifactual finding, which had been caused by the action of bowel bacteria upon the mucosa after the patient's death.
