This is a reverse view of a Petri dish culture plate that had cultivated a large colony of the dermatophytic fungus, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, cross-strain TM20 X TM17. The colony displayed an irregular, dark red central region that was surrounded by a bright yellow, granular perimeter, the edge of which feathered out into the Sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA) growth medium. T. mentagrophytes colonial coloration ranges from white to bright yellowish-beige, to red-violet. See PHIL 28755, for a frontal view of this colony.
