The man depicted here, in this 1966 image, was conducting a plague study in the San Francisco area, by capturing local rodents, then harvesting the fleas harbored by these animals. As possible plague vectors, these fleas were subsequently analyzed to see if they were, indeed, infected with the plague pathogen, Yersinia pestis.
