Under a magnification of 1500X, this photomicrograph of a sputum smear specimen, which had been processed using the Pap-stain method, revealed the presence of an unknown species of yeast. Note that a number of these yeast organisms were undergoing the reproductive process known as budding (arrows), and upon completion of this process, creating two genetically identical daughter cells.
