Caption:
These two photomicrographs compare the surface of two different tongues. The specimen on the left represented the epithelial surface of a normal tongue, while the specimen on the right, was extracted from the tongue’s surface of an individual with pernicious anemia, and reveals the atrophic histopathology seen in this disorder. Note the reduction in the number of lingual papillae, and the thinning exhibited by the stratified squamous epithelial layer covering the tongue's atrophic surface.
