This image was created in June, 2009, by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Health Communication Specialist, Stacey Hoffman, MPH, National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD), while in the Katsina State, Nigeria on a Stop Transmission of Polio (STOP) assignment. The photograph depicted a mother kneeling next to her young child outside their home. The child was a victim of polio, which appears to be why his mother was supporting him, holding him by his the right arm and torso, indicating his bilateral lower extremity paralysis, also known as flaccid paralysis, due to this disease.
