Entitled, “Global Polio Eradication Initiative”, this photo depicts two polio survivors, who had approached the WHO Polio Program vehicle, while in route to the national poliovirus laboratory in Maiduguri, Nigeria. In 2007, when the photo was taken, Nigeria was one of four countries that had never been able to stop polio transmission. Nigeria was removed from the endemic list on September 25, 2015. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative includes the World Health Organization, Rotary International, The United Nations Children’s Fund, and CDC. This photograph, by Epidemiologist-Informatician in the Global Immunization Division, Paul Chenoweth, ND, MPH, earned him a tie for Third Place award in the 2008 CDC Connects Annual Public Health in Action Photo Contest, in the category of “International: People”.
