Description:Caption:
This image depicts what had been determined to be a diphtheria skin lesion on a patient’s neck, which had been caused by the bacterium, Corynebacterium diphtheriae. C. diphtheriae not only affects the respiratory system, but can infect the skin as well, where it can manifest as an open wound (see PHIL 1941), or one that resembles an abrasion, like the one seen here.
