Entitled, “Enforcing Foreign Quarantine Regulations”, this image was captured by CDC Senior Veterinarian, Gale Galland, DVM, MS, with the Division of Global Migration and Quarantine (DGMQ), Quarantine Border and Health Services Branch (QBHSB). CDC’s DGMQ is responsible for carrying out HHS/CDC foreign quarantine regulations for the importation of nonhuman primates (NHPs). In April, 2011, the CDC Houston Quarantine Station and the Zoonosis Team responded to a call about a loose NHP on an international cargo vessel. This picture shows Thomas George boarding that vessel offshore, accompanied by U.S. Coast Guard and Customs and Border Protection partners. The picture earned Dr. Galland a tie for the First Place award in the 2011 CDC Connects Annual Public Health in Action Photo Contest, in the category of “Domestic People and Programs”.
