Photographed in 1970, this image depicted what was a chromatography column, which was used to separate, and purify chemicals from a mixture of different chemicals, and subsequently analyze the separated constituents, by way of processes including analytical chromatography, UV absorption, or fluorescence. Chromatography is the separation of a chemical mixture into its component compounds, by passing them through a system that is designed to trap, or slow their passing, based on particular molecular properties such as size, charge, or composition.
