These three matted staples of wool, which had been harvested from Merino sheep, were unable to be combed out because of their tangled morphology, due to a condition known as dermatophilosis, or lumpy wool disease in sheep, and is caused by the Gram-positive bacterium, Dermatophilus congolensis.
