Caption:
Under a magnification of 970X, this photomicrograph depicted a ruptured cleistothecium, or fruiting body, of the fungal organism, Penicillium vermiculatum. Note at the edge of the cleistothecium, you can see numerous liberated asci, which had been contained within during their development. See PHIL 19034 and 19037, for two views of an entire cleistothecium, which have been ruptured, revealing their contents of asci. The cleistothecium is a form of ascocarp, or closed fruiting body, composed of numerous interwoven hyphae. The asci contained inside, in turn, contain spore forming cells known as ascospores.
