Under a magnification of 970X, this photomicrograph depicts a ruptured cleistothecium, or fruiting body, of the fungal organism, Penicillium vermiculatum. Note at the edge of the cleistothecium you can see numerous liberated mature asci. The globose cleistothecium, is a form of ascocarp, or closed fruiting body, composed of numerous interwoven hyphae. Inside are contained numerous asci, or spore-forming cells known as ascospores.
