Description:Caption:
Captured at the water’s surface, as it emerged from its pupal exoskeleton, this soon-to-be adult Anopheles sp. mosquito was about to begin its life as a winged warrior. If this was a female mosquito, she would quickly assume her role as a malarial vector, obtaining her blood meal from her mammalian hosts, once every few days, and soon begin laying her own eggs at a rate of 50–200 eggs per oviposition. See PHIL 18765, for another view of this emerging mosquito, and 18766, for a composited view combining three images, pictorially telling the story of its emergence.
