This pathology specimen represented a hydatid cyst that had been excised from the tongue of an eighteen-year-old Bantu female. For purposes of scale, the cyst had been cut in half exposing its interior hollow, and photographed adjacent to a razor blade, giving you a sense of how large the specimen had been. This cyst was had been caused by the larval stages of cestodes (tapeworms) of the genus, Echinococcus.
