Caption:
This photograph, made available by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), depicts a view of a skin lesion known as an atypical nevus, located on this patient’s right shoulder. Though heterogeneously pigmented, i.e., dark brown to light brown, the lesion turned out to be benign, or noncancerous. This lesion exhibited a regular border, and was symmetrically round, which are characteristics that would initially indicate to a trained dermatologist that it was a benign. Note that a closer view of this nevus can be seen in PHIL 18396. Use of this image requires acknowledgement that NCI is the image source, as well as the inclusion of the website, www.cancer.gov.
