This 1969 image depicts the face of a 3-month-old boy, on the 2nd day post-onset of his maculopapular smallpox rash. Here you can see that the boy’s face is covered in papules. At this stage of rash evolution, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish its appearance from that of chickenpox, or measles.
