This image was captured in Monrovia, Liberia’s capital city, during the 2014, West African Ebola outbreak that affected not only Liberia, but Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Nigeria as well. In this particular view, Dr. Tom Frieden, former Director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), had donned his personal protective equipment (PPE) in preparation of entering the Ebola treatment unit (ETU), known as ELWA 3, which opened on August 17th. Médecins Sans Frontières, or Doctors Without Borders, operates the ELWA 3 ETU.
