Under a magnification of 970X, this photomicrograph reveals some of the ultrastructural morphology exhibited by the fungal organism, Fonsecaea pedrosoi, formerly known as Hormodendrum pedrosoi. Note the septate, hyaline hyphae, and conidiophores, as well as numerous, barrel-shaped conidia, emanating from the distal tip of each branching conidiophore. This organism is known to be one of the causes for the cutaneous fungal infection known as chromoblastomycosis, usually affecting the lower extremities.
