This historic 1977 photograph depicted a laboratory technician in the process of cleaning, and sterilizing a number of glass microscope slides, prior to using them in subsequent laboratory procedures. At this point in the cleaning process, the tech had extracted a glass slide that had been soaking in an alcohol bath contained in a glass canister, which still contained a number of soaking slides, yet to be wiped dry. The extracted slide was being dried, by wiping it with a clean, dry towel. Modern day protocols call for laboratory workers, performing tasks inside the laboratory environment, to wear the appropriate personal protective equipment, including disposable latex gloves.
