This 1969 photograph was captured somewhere in India, and depicted the left eye of a patient, who had presented with a case of severe, blinding episcleritis with an accompanying staphyloma, which was due to a case of Hansen’s disease, or leprosy. Leprosy is caused by the bacterium, Mycobacterium leprae. Episcleritis is an inflammatory condition of the thin tissue layer covering the white part of the eye, or sclera. The staphyloma is an abnormal protrusion of the eyeball’s interior through the globe’s middle, or uveal layer.
