Caption:
This photomicrograph of a skin tissue specimen, revealed histopathologic features within a foam cell granuloma of the corium, or dermal layer of the skin, which had been processed using an acid-fast staining method. This specimen was derived from the same source as PHIL 17321. Note the presence of innumerable Mycobacterium leprae bacilli, the cause of leprosy, and which were made visible using this acid-fast method. Foam cell granulomas are indicative of the lepromatous form of leprosy, which was the case in this individual.
