This historic image depicts a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) scientist, who was dressed in his airtight, blue colored, protective suit, including a facemask, while he was seated in a Biosafety Level-4 laboratory (BSL-4). At this point in his lab related activities, he was pipetting an unknown sample, inside the confines of a negatively pressurized flow hood. This type of hood, draws laboratory air into the hood, thereby, keeping any pathogens, liberated within the hood, from entering the laboratory environment. While the scientist was suited up, fresh air was supplied by a red, coiled tube, which attach to the suit (see PHIL 1695 and 1858).
