This laboratorian was in the process of inoculating a number of suckling mice with a mosquito suspension. At this moment, the mother mouse was standing upright, against the side of the container in which she and her brood, were being kept, while the offspring were out of sight on the bottom of the container. The mosquito suspension is created when pulverized mosquitoes, suspected of carrying a viral pathogen, are then added to a diluent. The suspension is then injected intracranially into the mice. Later the mouse brain tissue would be tested for the presence of the virus, using the indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) test, then observed under microscopic examination.
