This photomicrograph reveals the histopathologic changes in a human skin specimen that had been infected with the smallpox variola virus. Note the vacuolization, and ballooning degeneration taking place in the in the dermal layers, which would eventually cause the upper layers of the epidermis to detach, giving rise to the lesion’s papular morphology.
