This 1972 image depicted the activities at what was an active landfill in an unknown location, at a point where selected pesticides were being unloaded so that they could be deposited in a manner appropriate to their toxic nature. This type of landfill must meet stringent requirements including maintenance of a specified depth, use of an impermeable synthetic bottom liner to prevent pollution of groundwater, and when filled to a specified compacted depth, it is covered by a layer of sand, and topped with another synthetic liner, in order to prevent water from entering the refuse. Finally, topsoil is placed atop the filled site, which is then covered by grasses.
