This 1972 image depicted the activities at what was an active landfill somewhere in Kentucky, at a point where pesticides, and numbers of pesticide containers were being unloaded that had been involved in a transportation related accident. This type of landfill must meet stringent requirements including maintenance of a specified depth, use of an impermeable synthetic bottom liner to prevent pollution of groundwater, and when filled to a specified compacted depth, it is covered by a layer of sand, and topped with another synthetic liner, in order to prevent water from entering the refuse. Finally, topsoil is placed atop the filled site, which is then covered by grasses.
