This historic image depicted Indonesian students, who were in the process of participating in a maritime vessel fumigation training exercise in Indonesia, during the country’s 1969 plague epidemic. At the front of the classroom, on the blackboard behind the instructor, was a list of terms entitled, Fumigation Check List, and contained the essential items needed to perform the requisite procedures upon appropriate vessels docked in Indonesian seaports. Plague vectors such as rats, and their accompanying fleas often use sea vessels as vehicles to disseminate their populations. Therefore, the implementation of counter measures, including fumigation of a ship and its cargo, is essential to keeping pathogen vectors at bay, disabling their spread both locally, and abroad.
