This photomicrograph revealed the presence of seven, Trypanosoma sp. parasitic organisms, in a human blood sample extracted from a 57-year-old missionary, who had returned to the United States. The traveler received treatment for his illness, known as African trypanosomiasis, also referred to as sleeping sickness.
