Captured inside one of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) facilities, this image from approximately 1980 showed Virologist, Dr. James H. Nakano, as he was working with the contents of a freezer in which was stored samples of the smallpox virus. At the time of this photograph, the CDC was one of four places throughout the world in which the smallpox virus was stored, in order for scientists to be able to revisit this highly-infectious pathogen, during future study involving the biologic intricacies associated with this, and other Poxviridae family members.
