Captured in an unidentified location in 1972, this young patient had been infected with the smallpox virus, revealing the characteristic maculopapular rash that had spread over the skin of the neck and upper back. The image, taken on the 5th day of this patient’s illness, highlighted the morphology of the pox lesions.
