At the time of this photograph, this mixed black Labrador Retriever was hosting an unwanted guest, which proved to be the horse fly, Tabanus stygius, pictured in PHIL 15998. T. stygius often attack both dogs and humans, inflicting a painful bite, using its mandibles to cut through a host’s skin in order to obtain its blood meal.
