This photomicrograph of a Gram-stained specimen, revealed the presence of numerous, Bacillus pumilus bacteria, many of which had entered an endospore phase of their lifecycle. B. pumilus is a Gram-positive, endospore-forming bacterium that is present throughout the environment, and has been shown to be highly resistant to environmental stresses including exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, drying experienced in arid climates, and when tested under laboratory conditions, resistant to the oxidative effects of hydrogen peroxide.
