This photomicrograph of a Giemsa-stained sample of a human blood specimen, revealed the presence of an intraerythrocytic, vacuolated form of the parasite, Babesia microti. Babesia species resemble Plasmodium falciparum, however, Babesia has several distinguishing features: the parasites are pleomorphic, can be vacuolated, and do not produce pigment.
