Caption:
This historic 1975 image was captured in a village in the Indian State of Bihar in Eastern India. This particular scene featured a family inside their residence, with the wife busy over the family’s cooking fire, while her smallpox-infected husband was crouched in the background, and a child stood to his mother’s right. At this moment, Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO) personnel were in the process of examining the husband. The image was captured by a Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Bureau of State Services staff member, during one of the smallpox immunization-related trips to that region of the world.
