This August 1968 map, along with PHIL 15874, 15876, and 15877, demarcated the geographic regions affected by the spread of the A (H3N2) 1968–1969 Hong Kong Flu pandemic, over a 6-month period, which caused about 34,000 deaths in the United States. This virus was first detected in Hong Kong, in early 1968, and spread to the United States later that year. Influenza A (H3N2) viruses still circulate today.
