Caption:
This image is a collage of photomicrographs representing the karyotype of a person, who was born with a chromosomal aberration known as trisomy 21, more commonly known as Down syndrome (DS), which is represented here, by an extra chromosome 21 (arrowhead). A karyotype represents a complete set of chromosomes in each and every eukaryotic cell of an individual organism. The chromosomes are arranged in pairs, and aligned using the position of each chromosome’s centromere. Pairs are then arranged into groups A through G, based on size.
