Caption:
This image depicts five Petri dish culture plates that had been filled with an agar based medium of yeast extract, cysteine, and ferric pyrophosphate, to which high concentrations of D- or L-tyrosine, or D- or L-phenylalanine had been added. These plates had been inoculated with the bacterium, Legionella pneumophila, designated Philadelphia 2 strain (PHI-2). Note that browning of the medium had occurred, when L. pneumophila had been grown in the presence of high concentrations of L-tyrosine, and somewhat in the presence of added L-phenylalanine, but no browning when the D-isomers were included in the mixture.
