Caption:
This image depicted two, 24-well biochemical test plates, shown side-by-side, that had been prepared in order to determine the identification of an unknown bacterial organism, using various biochemical tests sensitive to the metabolic processes the organism uses to survive and thrive. Based on the constituents in each well, and how the specific organism interacts with these ingredients in a metabolic manner, the identity may be determined. Some wells may, or may not produce a color change. Others may, or may not produce a solid precipitate, and in accordance with experiential, reproducible data, algorithmic interpretation of the results is what will eventually lead to a positive identification of the bacterium.
