This image depicts a left lateral view of the crustacean known as the Stone Mountain fairy shrimp, Branchinella lithaca, that is only found inhabiting freshwater weather pools on Stone Mountain, a granite outcropping located in Dekalb County, Georgia. The Stone Mountain fairy shrimp inhabits shot-lived freshwater weather pools located only atop Dekalb County, Georgia’s, Stone Mountain, which is the world’s largest granite outcropping. After mating, if the puddle environment dries up, the eggs will remain dormant, yet viable until the next rainfall.
